  2. VITAMIN C TOLERANCE TEST

WHAT IS THE VIT C TOLERANCE TEST?

A Vitamin C tolerance test (or bowel flush) is a safe and effective way to identify your current and personal daily C requirement. To do the test, you’ll take small amounts of buffered Vitamin C over the course of a few hours, and record the total amount. Once your body’s Vitamin C receptors reach their saturation point, you’ll experience flushing of the bowels, with watery-loose stools. Its worth it! Besides a bowel flush, you’ll be determining your ideal daily Vitamin C dosage. The Vitamin C protocol described here is both a diagnostic and therapeutic tool. It can be used every few months to calibrate your dosing requirements over time.

WHY DO I NEED VITAMIN C?

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for humans, this means we cannot produce our own Vitamin C. It can only be obtained in the diet and consumption Why do we need it? It has numerous roles, but here are a few:
    • Enzyme cofactor (you cant go from point A to point B without enzymes and these enzymes cant work without vitamin C)
    • Antioxidant (Scavenge free radicals)
    • It’s involvement in crucial steps for detoxification, neurotransmitter synthesis, tissue repair, and immune function.

WHY SHOULD I DETERMINE MY UNIQUE NEED?

Vitamin C is water-soluble and not stored in our body for long- it needs to be replenished every day. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of Vitamin C for a healthy adult woman is 75 mg, and 90 mg for men (per the US National Academy of Sciences). While these amounts are enough to prevent scurvy and severe Vitamin C deficiency, current recommended daily allowances may be severely outdated. For this reason, many recommend the Vitamin C flush to identify your current Vitamin C tolerance.

HOW TO DO THE VITAMIN C BOWEL FLUSH

First, get a powdered Vitamin C product that is buffered, fully reduced, and 100% L-Ascorbate (humans only utilize L-Ascorbate). The buffering agents should be natural and consist of essential minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium and zinc. We recommend Thorne Buffered C Powder, 8.15 oz (available in our shop). A powdered formula is ideal because it has a more predictable absorption.

    WHEN TO TEST

Pick a day when you’ve got nothing on the calendar. Ahem... it’s called a flush for a reason! You’ll experience a sudden release of loose stool once you’ve fully saturated your body with Vitamin C, so plan on being near a toilet.

    STEPS FOR VIT C FLUSH

    1. Start on an empty stomach, morning is best.
    2. Dissolve 2,000 mg of powdered Vitamin C in a glass of water (2,000 mg = 2.0 grams).
    3. Grab a pen and paper and chart how much Vitamin C you consume, along with the time
    4.  Every twenty minutes take another 2,000 mg (dissolved in a glass of water), and record it on your chart
    5. Continue this process until you experience evacuation of loose stool. Since everyone has different Vitamin C requirements, the time to reach saturation will vary from person to person. Most people achieve flushing in 2-3 hours time, but some may take longer. If you think it’s taking longer than expected, you can double the dose in order to reach saturation quicker.
    6.  Record the total amount of Vitamin C you’ve consumed (EVERY 20 MINUTES)

CALCULATING YOUR DAILY VITAMIN C REQUIREMENT

Once your bowels reach saturation, you’re done with the hard part! Don't you feel lighter? Now all that’s left is to calculate your optimal daily dose of Vitamin C for future use. Add up the total amount of Vitamin C you ingested during the flush, and calculate 75% of that total (multiply by 0.75). This gives you your ideal daily dose, just under your threshold for flushing. For example, if you ingested 2g + 2g + 2g + 2g + 2g = 10g during the flush; your ideal daily dose would be ~7.5g daily. Round to a convenient number for easy dosing. Spread your Vitamin C dosing throughout the day, for example in 2-3 equal doses. Powder, tablet, or capsule formulations all work fine here, with or without food.

ADJUSTING YOUR VITAMIN C DOSAGE OVER TIME

As time goes on and your normal physiology improves, your body will require less and less Vitamin C. If you happen to notice mild abdominal cramping or loose stool, cut back on the daily dose by a fraction, and arrange some time for another flush. During the early stages of this protocol, you can calibrate with a flush every 2-3 weeks. You can prevent the unintended TESTING by using our LIPOSOMAL VITAMIN C once you determine your dose. You may expect to eventually arrive at an average dose of anywhere from 2-10 grams daily (That's a BIG average range) Keep in mind that this is a dynamic process, and your needs may fluctuate up or down depending on numerous factors, including stress, sleep, nutrition or chronic health conditions. Please note that if you choose to discontinue Vitamin C supplementation, do so gradually to prevent rebound deficiency. It’s safe to cut down slowly by 1-2 grams per week.

WHO’S AT RISK FOR LOW VITAMIN C?

Because of common dietary and lifestyle challenges, environmental hazards, and RX use- many of us may have LOW Vitamin C status. Here are some examples:
    • People with chronic stress, injury, or infection have been shown to have dramatically increased demand for Vitamin C.
    • Women with increased levels of estrogen from the oral contraceptive pill or Hormone Replacement Therapy may have lower levels of Vitamin C.
    • Cigarette smoking is known to deplete Vitamin C levels, with the added risk of accumulating free radicals from smoking.
    • Alzheimer’s patients have been found to have lower levels of Vitamin C than normal individuals.
    • Cancer patients have consistently been shown to have compromised Vitamin C status, with lower levels than healthy controls. In fact, more advanced malignancy may directly correlate with lower levels of Vitamin C.
    • People with acute viral illness (such as influenza, EBV flare-up or coronavirus) may have increased Vitamin C requirements.
In short, we’re all a bit different. Diet, genetics, and lifestyle all factor in. Thankfully, the Vitamin C flush is an easy tool to use.

    SAFETY OF VITAMIN C

Vitamin C remains remarkably safe, with few side effects even when administered at high doses. The main side effects when taken by mouth include mild stomach cramping and loose stools. Intravenous Vitamin C has been used to treat cancer patients for many decades. These patients have been found to easily tolerate up to 200 grams of intravenous Vitamin C at a time, with little to no side effects! Some people should use Vitamin C with caution, such as those with chronic kidney disease, G6PD deficiency, or hemochromatosis.
